About

Railway to Greenway is a York Greenways project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project aims to explore the history of the traffic free route from York to Selby, once the East Coast Main Line, now known as the Solar System Greenway. This history, which includes the short-lived Selby coalfield, dramatically illustrates the impact of the industrial and post-industrial revolutions on the lives of ordinary people.

The project was due to run for a year until October 2018 but is still live as one or two aspects of the planned project have been unavoidably delayed. The Heritage Lottery Fund has been very understanding. This website will be continually extended and developed over this period and we welcome contributions fro butm anyone with memories to share. These will be included in the virtual archive along with related material from a variety of sources, including national museums and local history groups. Selected material will be made available to the wider public through the website, documentaries, artwork and interpretation boards. These will remain available indefinitely.

York Greenways is an independent local voluntary organisation. You can find out more about us on our website www.yorkgreenways.org from where you can follow us on Twitter and Facebook. New members are always welcome.

Heritage Lottery funding enables us to buy in professional support where necessary but the success of the project will depend on volunteer input (as indeed does all of York Greenways’ work!). If you are interested in getting involved, please contact us on hello@yorkgreenways.org.
