Sailing on the Ouse – Railway Institute Sailing Club in the 1960s

Two films of sailing taking place from the York Railway Institute Sailing Club  – previously part of the British Transport network of clubs – located under Naburn Bridge. These can be seen on the Yorkshire Film Archive website –

First is a 15 minutes amateur film about the 1964 Watkins Trophy raced at York but involving other British Transport club boats from Leicester and London. http://www.yorkshirefilmarchive.com/film/watkins-trophy-1964

Apart from the clothing and boats, the most noticeable changes are along the river bank. Both Marina and Sewage Farm have undergone huge changes and the vegetation has grown substantially

Next is a 7 minute clip of the 1968 Compass Trophy, a race which is still run annually at the club http://www.yorkshirefilmarchive.com/film/1968-compass-trophy-race
