The Selby Complex by Dave Douglass

This article provides a general history of the Selby Coalfield. It has a particular emphasis on industrial relations at Selby with a firsthand account of the 1984/1985 Miner’s Strike at Gascoigne Wood along with pictures of the National Union of Mineworkers banners for a number of the local branches.

Dave Douglass was a prominent figure within the Mining Community. Serving as the National Union of Mineworkers Delegate and, later, Secretary for the Hatfield Branch. Following the privatisation of the Hatfield Colliery, he opened the Miners Community Advice Centre to aid members of the community. He is also the author of various books regarding the history of miners and socialism.
