University of York Sociology Report

Students from the Department of Sociology at the University of York carried out a research project in Summer 2018 with users of the York Greenway. They carried out interviews with walkers, and also an online survey with cyclists who use the path. They wanted to know more about why people use the Greenway, how different groups use it, and whether they have suggestions for its development in the future. Participants in the research really liked the path’s accessibility; its peaceful qualities; its sculptures, artwork and Solar System Greenway. The Naburn Station Trust Hut, and the work of its facilitator, was highlighted by many as a favourite reason to visit the Greenway. The research also raised some areas for improvement, such as more amenities, better maintenance in places and the longer term goals of a wider path and completely car-free environment. The research was carried out by Laura Parkes and Samantha West, supported by Sociology staff, Daryl Martin and Sarah Nettleton. You can read about Laura and Samantha’s research here, and if you have any questions about it, please contact Daryl, at daryl.martin@york.ac.uk.
