The end of the Selby “Super Pit” was in large part because it could not compete with imported coal from countries like Colombia, Poland, Russia or the United States. Imported coal was not cheaper because it was mined more efficiently but because other countries lacked the safety standards, environmental constraints and the decent wages and other benefits won by British miners over the years.
