Interview: Arthur Richmond, Plate-layer

Arthur Richmond started as a plate-layer with the DVLR in 1942. After War Service he then joined the LNER on track maintenance in 1945. Based between Challoners Whin and Ulleskelf – he often worked overtime on the York Selby line at weekends. He remembers the pressure of getting work done on time regardless of the weather, with frozen stone needing to be hammered apart. He was often required to do ‘long welding’ but his favourite task was ‘walking the line’. He describes the long welding and the measuring equipment used. On his retirement he worked as a plate layer on the Derwent Valley Light Railway.
