Russ was a fourth generation miner. He started working at Sharlston *  and worked there until it closed in 1995 . After a couple of years outside the industry, he went back as a  contractor at Selby eventually joining UK Coal. Like others who came from ‘family’ pits he was astonished at the scale and sophisticaltion of Selby’s operation.

He stayed at Selby unitl it shut in 2004 when he moved on to Kellingley. Russ discusses how, with better forward plannng and carbon capture, there could have been a future for a number of the more modern pits.
