This is an oral recording (and transcription) of a description of the origins of Sustrans and the construction of the Solar System Greenway as the first 6 miles of what is now the National Cycle Network. John also goes on to talk about the New HS2 cycle route for which his new company Greenways and Cycleroutes Ltd is the lead consultant. The discussion includes valuable insights into how voluntary organisations can work with local and central government agencies and the problems of financing the construction and maintenance of green infrastructure.
The recording is of a discussion with Professor Daryl Martin of the University of York’s Sociology Department who was undertaking research on the cost-benefits of green infrastructure. The results of this research will be published on this website later this year (2018).
