Robert Cayton’s son Les still lives in Bishopthorpe. He was brought up in the cottages by the bridge over Acaster Lane.
There were originally four cottages built in 1870-71 to house the local railway employees. The cottages were so close to the line that in the days of steam trains the curtains would use to turn black due to the soot!
Bishopthorpe Community Archive has a recorded interview with Les. The family has photos which we will hope to feature in the future.
