OPERATION OF A LONGWALL COAL CUTTER

1957

The National Coal Board (NCB) Film Unit is one of Britain’s most substantial and long-lasting industrial film units. The following is an informative film of how a longwall coal cutter works and how it strips coal from the face.

Title – Operating A Longwall Coal Cutter

Nine out of ten machines used in cutting coal are longwall coal cutters. Using illustration and narration, it describes how the coal cutter works.

On a workshop floor the coal cutter is shown in clear view, with each section explained for its function.

In the coal mine it shows miners using the coal cutting machine, and what each miner needs to do to control the machine.

The footage then goes extensively through where and how each part works when cutting the coal. Close ups of the machine are shown.
