The opening of the Haddlesey-Selby Canal in 1778 helped to increase trade in Selby via the River Ouse, though prior to this time it is likely that ships had landed at Selby occasionally.
A ship c. 1800s, which would have navigated the Ouse prior to the arrival of steam power or the construction of the canal.
